Michigan College and Career Month: October
Goal: To promote a college-going culture at BHS and encourage all seniors to have a college application submitted and/or discuss post-secondary plans and submit the FAFSA.
- Students, we will be discussing college and post-secondary opportunities with you throughout the month
- College/staff member scavenger hunt: pick up a scavenger hunt form during lunch or in the BHS office, fill it out and return to Mrs. Haskins by Thursday to win a prize (which teacher played football in college and won a hot dog eating contest?!
- Seniors-have you filled out your college apps yet? If not, meet with Mrs. Haskins in the computer lab this week for assistance
- Students and Staff – Wear your college attire to school. Students – this could be your favorite college or where you plan to go!
Group Counseling
We are pleased to offer group counseling for our students to support their social/emotional needs.
- Lory’s Place Group
- Grief group for students who have lost a loved one; meets monthly for one hour during the school day. Please click here for more information: Lory’s Place Information
- Club H20
- Club H20 is a girl’s self-esteem group that meets once/week for six-week increments. Contact Mrs. Haskins for more information
Dual Enrollment Opportunities
Qualified students have the opportunity to enroll in college-level courses while still in high school under the provisions of the Post Secondary Options Act of 1996. Interested students/parents must notify the Guidance Office of their intent to participate by scheduling deadlines. Contact the Guidance Office for more information. Applications due by March 1st of the year prior.

Educational Development Plans
Students will update their Educational Development Plan (EDP) each year in high school. Students will select their career pathway, complete career assessments, create a talent portfolio, and complete a four-year educational plan through a program called XELLO.

Financial Aid/Paying for College Night and FAFSA Workshop
The presentation will include an overview of financial aid, identify steps to follow when applying for financial aid, identify financial aid resources, and provide assistance in preparing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA opens Oct. 1st and you can now use last year’s tax information to fill out the FAFSA.
We will have Financial Aid Representatives from local colleges and universities on hand to help you fill out the FAFSA online in our computer lab.
Please bring:
-FSA ID Number; if first time filling out FAFSA, you can request an ID that night; both student and parent need an FSA ID
-Past year tax info, parent and student W2s: current year and prior year
-Records of any other income (child support, unemployment etc..)
-Social Security Numbers (Parents and Student)

College Visit Dates and Information
Colleges send representatives to Bridgman throughout the year. If your student is interested in attending a college presentation, please have them contact the guidance office prior to the day of the visit.

Deadlines for College Applications
Application deadlines vary from college to college but the general rule is that students should submit their college applications before or by October 1st of their senior year. I like to give students Halloween as a goal to submit applications by. After completing college applications, students should request a transcript via www.parchment.com

Portfolio Project Requirement; Portfolio Day: 4/13
In order to complete the Bridgman High School Graduation Requirements students must create a Portfolio. Seniors will need to present their completed Portfolios at Portfolio Day. At Portfolio Day, students will be required to participate in at least one simulated job interview with business professionals who will be in attendance at the event. Students who have not completed their Portfolios will not be eligible to participate in the Graduation Ceremonies. The portfolio must contain a cover letter, a resume, two letters of recommendation (at least one non-school related), and a list of personal and professional references (at least three references).

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The universal form for applying for financial aid is the FAFSA. The FAFSA opens on October 1. In order to qualify for financial aid from the State of Michigan the forms must be received by March 1. The FAFSA can be filed online and an FSA ID can be requested at www.fafsa.ed.gov .
Scholarships
Along with applying for financial aid students should complete a scholarship search. A scholarship search should include:
- A free scholarship search available on numerous financial aid websites (see Helpful Web sites). Or check www.fastweb.com or www.myscholly.com
- A contact with the financial aid office of the college or university you are planning on attending for a list of available scholarships. Many schools post the list on their school’s website.
- Acquiring a list of the scholarships that have been sent to the School Counseling Office. The listing includes any scholarship applications that we have on file and is updated weekly beginning in November. The list will include many of the scholarships offered by local clubs and organizations.

The PSAT is being given to all juniors on a Wednesday in at Bridgman High School. This will help prepare students for the SAT as part of the April state testing.
Michigan Merit Examination
All juniors in the State of Michigan will be taking the Michigan Merit Examination (MME) beginning on April 12, 2016. The MME will consist of the SAT College Entrance Exam, the ACT Work Keys, and the M-Step, (a computer based test covering Science and Social Studies). The MME will be used to determine whether juniors are meeting or exceeding the Michigan Curriculum Standards.
